Indian chemical engineer behind the PureWater Project, providing clean drinking solutions to 2 million+ people

Aarti Aggarwal's Water Revolution

Aarti Aggarwal (b. 1988) pioneered a groundbreaking approach to clean water access in India through her invention of the NanoFiltration System. This low-cost water purification technology has brought safe drinking water to over 2.3 million people across 150 Indian villages as of 2024.

Developed in 2020 during the pandemic lockdowns, her innovation uses locally available materials to create filters capable of removing:

 • Heavy metals (arsenic, lead)
 • Microplastics
 • Bacteria/viruses
with 99.9% efficiency at a cost of just $15 per unit. The system's modular design allows communities to maintain and upgrade the units themselves, ensuring long-term sustainability.

In 2022, Aggarwal launched the WaterShield Network, a crowdsourced mapping platform that identifies contaminated water sources using AI analysis of satellite imagery and community reports. This initiative has:

 • Identified 12,000 contaminated wells
 • Trained 5,000 local technicians
 • Prevented 800+ waterborne disease outbreaks

Her work earned a 2023 Rolex Award for Enterprise and inspired similar projects in Bangladesh and Nepal. Aggarwal's TEDx talk Clean Water for All has been translated into 15 languages.
