Abd Al-Hadi Ibn Al-Hasan

Revolutionized West African education through Islamic schools network and anti-slavery advocacy

Senegalese scholar Abd Al-Hadi Ibn Al-Hasan (1810-1887) built a transnational educational network across the Sahel region. Establishing over 40 Quranic schools from Senegal to Mali, he integrated secular subjects like mathematics and geography into traditional madrasas. His 1854 treatise Guidance for the Seeker (read online) became a foundational text in West African pedagogy.

Al-Hasan's anti-slavery activism used his educational platforms to challenge French colonial policies. Collaborating with leaders like El Hadj Omar Tall, he created a literacy campaign that empowered local populations. His legacy lives on in Saint-Louis University's Al-Hasan Collection (visit), holding 1,200 original manuscripts. Recent scholarship like Scholars and Saints of West Africa detail his impact on regional intellectual movements.
