Aditya Mukarji
Indian social entrepreneur who created India's largest waste-to-energy network through his startup Swachh Energy
Aditya Mukarji (b. 1989) is the founder of Swachh Energy, a company that has transformed India's waste management landscape. His patented BioPower Cube technology converts organic waste into biogas and compost, providing affordable energy solutions to over 2,500 villages since 2020. Each unit processes 2 tons of waste daily while generating electricity for 50 homes.
Mukarji's decentralized model empowers local communities by creating waste collection cooperatives, generating income for 15,000+ rural workers. His partnership with the Indian Railways in 2022 diverted 80% of station waste from landfills, powering 200 railway stations through biogas. This initiative won the UN's Climate Action Award in 2023.
In 2024, he launched Urban Swachh, a mobile app connecting households to waste-to-energy centers through blockchain-based carbon credits. This platform has reduced municipal waste costs by 30% in 12 Indian cities. His TED Talk "Waste is the world's most wasted resource" has become required viewing in environmental policy courses globally.
Mukarji's work is featured prominently in the documentary series "India's Green Revolution" and his startup was valued at $150M in Series B funding led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures. He recently advised the Indian government's new National Circular Economy Policy, which aims to eliminate landfill use by 2030.
