Adriana Borges
Brazilian biologist leading Amazon rainforest restoration projects
Adriana Borges (b.1972) pioneered ecological corridor systems in the Amazon, restoring 250,000 hectares of degraded land by 2005. Her seed vault network preserved 1,200 native species threatened by deforestation, later adopted by UN's Decade on Ecosystem Restoration program. She developed community-based agroforestry models that doubled income for 10,000+ families while reducing logging by 40% in targeted regions.
Her River Guardian initiative trained indigenous women as environmental monitors using satellite tracking, featured in National Geographic's Amazon Frontlines documentary series. The Brazilian government adopted her carbon credit framework in 2003, creating the first Amazon-wide emissions trading system. Her 2008 book 《Amazon Reborn》 became required reading in Yale's environmental studies program. The World Wildlife Fund now replicates her bio-cultural reserves model across 12 countries.
