Adriana Wiedemann
Brazilian architect pioneering sustainable housing solutions for urban poor communities
Background and Vision
Adriana Wiedemann, born in 1978 in São Paulo, Brazil, grew up in a favela where she saw the urgent need for dignified housing. After studying architecture at the University of São Paulo, she became determined to create affordable housing models that respected both people and the environment.
Green Housing Revolution
In 2001, Wiedemann launched Casas Verdes, a social enterprise that builds eco-friendly homes using recycled materials. Her signature 'EcoCasa' model costs just $5,000 and includes solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems. Over 10,000 homes have been built across Brazil's slums through this initiative.
Innovative Financing Models
Wiedemann's most groundbreaking contribution is the 'Sustainable Equity' program, where residents pay only 10% of their income for 10 years. After this period, they gain full ownership of their homes. This model has been replicated in 8 other Latin American countries through partnerships with UN-Habitat.
Global Impact
Her work was highlighted in the 2015 UN Habitat Report as a best practice for urban development. Despite multiple architecture awards, Wiedemann remains focused on scaling her model through her TED Talk series 'Building Dignity, Brick by Brick'.
