Aklilu Lemma
Ethiopian scientist who discovered natural bilharzia prevention using endod berries
Dr. Aklilu Lemma (1935–1997) revolutionized tropical disease prevention through his 1964 discovery that endod (Phytolacca dodecandra) berries could kill schistosomiasis-carrying snails. This plant-based solution offered sustainable parasite control in impoverished regions, earning him the Right Livelihood Award in 1989.
Despite skepticism from Western pharmaceutical companies, Lemma persisted for 20 years validating endod's safety and efficacy. His Addis Ababa University team proved the berries' saponins could reduce schistosomiasis transmission by 90% in field trials. The WHO finally endorsed endod in 1993 as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic molluscicides.
Lemma's work exemplifies South-South scientific cooperation. He collaborated with Tanzanian researchers and established the Institute of Pathobiology to train African scientists. Today, endod cultivation projects continue in Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, maintaining Lemma's vision of accessible, community-driven health solutions.
