Aman Nath

Indian textile innovator preserving traditional crafts through sustainable fashion enterprises

Aman Nath (1955-2021) was a pioneering figure in India's handloom revival movement. Co-founding Dastkar in 1989, he created a national network connecting artisans with global markets. His 1990s 'Textiles of India' exhibitions in Paris and New York redefined perceptions of Indian craft. Nath's 2003 initiative 'Weavers' Service Centre' provided design training to over 10,000 rural weavers. His 2010 book 《Silk Roads: The Living Tradition》 documents endangered weaving techniques. Collaborations with designers like Wendell Castle brought traditional motifs to contemporary interiors. Posthumously, his work inspired the 2022 documentary Threads of Resistance. Legacy Foundation continues his mission. Nath's approach blended cultural preservation with economic empowerment, making artisanal crafts viable in modern economies.
