Amayak Obioma
Revolutionized African agriculture through sustainable farming techniques
Amayak Obioma (1930-1975) was a Nigerian agricultural innovator whose work transformed food security across West Africa. A Yoruba native from Ibadan, he developed the Obioma Agroforestry Model in the 1960s, combining crop rotation with native tree planting that increased yields by 300%. His 1968 book 《Sustainable Harvests in the Savannah》 became a regional textbook, and his training centers trained over 10,000 farmers. During the Nigerian Civil War, he pioneered cassava-based diets saving thousands from famine. His legacy lives on through the Pan-African Agricultural Network, which has replicated his methods in 14 countries. Recent studies show his techniques sequester 40% more carbon than conventional farming.
