Somali tech entrepreneur building digital infrastructure in conflict zones
Amina Jibril (b.1988) is transforming Somalia's tech landscape through her company Dhax Africa. After surviving the 2010 famine, she developed the first blockchain-based food distribution system to prevent corruption in aid delivery. Her 2016 SafeHunger platform now manages 40% of UN food aid in the Horn of Africa, reducing fraud by 76% per WFP audits.
Jibril's 2018 launch of Mogadishu Cloud created Africa's first data center in a conflict zone, enabling startups to operate securely. Her 2020 documentary Code for Peace won a Peabody Award, showcasing how tech innovation is rebuilding communities. As UNDP digital advisor since 2021, she's deploying AI-powered early warning systems for droughts that saved 200,000 livestock in 2022. She was named one of Time's Tech Pioneers and received the $1M Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation in 2023.
