Ani Choying Drolma
Nepalese Buddhist nun who transformed trauma into global education activism
Ani Choying Drolma (b.1971), known as the Singing Nun of Nepal, channeled childhood abuse into founding the Aarubot Foundation. Her 15 schools provide free education to 3400+ marginalized girls, incorporating:
- Trauma-informed mindfulness curricula
- Solar-powered e-learning in Himalayan villages
- Vocational training in sustainable agriculture
Her 1997 album 『Cho』 became Asia's first Buddhist pop phenomenon, funding Nepal's first women's hospital. Through Gyalwang Drukpa's guidance, she established:
- Anti-trafficking hotlines rescuing 1200+ girls
- Menstrual hygiene workshops ending school dropout rates
- Cross-border education for Tibetan refugee children
Featured in BBC's Global Goddesses documentary, Drolma redefined monastic feminism through radical compassion.
