Ann Makosinski
Teen inventor creating sustainable energy solutions through body heat and handheld devices
Ann Makosinski (b. 1997) captured global attention at 15 by inventing the Hollow Flashlight, powered solely by hand heat. This innovation earned her a 2013 Google Science Fair prize and established her as a pioneer in thermoelectric energy harvesting.
Born in Victoria, Canada, Makosinski began inventing at age 10. Her flashlight uses Peltier tiles to convert temperature differences into electricity, eliminating batteries. She later created the eDrink mug that converts excess heat from beverages into USB power. Her TED Talks have inspired millions to rethink renewable energy.
Now a UC Berkeley graduate, Makosinski continues developing consumer tech through her company Makotronics Enterprises. Her inventions exemplify how youth can drive sustainable innovation. She's been featured in TIME Magazine's 30 Under 30 and collaborates with NASA on energy-efficient systems.
