Indian environmental engineer leading clean water initiatives in Himalayan regions
Anuradha Sharma (b. 1974) is a visionary behind India's Project PureFlow, which has provided safe drinking water to over 250,000 people in the Himalayas. Her 2005 invention of the Gravity-Powered BioSand Filter reduced waterborne diseases by 70% in pilot regions. In 2012, she founded WaterShield Solutions, scaling this technology through community training programs.
Sharma's 2018 collaboration with UNEP expanded her systems to Nepal and Bhutan, creating 3,000+ local jobs in filter manufacturing. Her 2020 Climate-Resilient Watersheds project uses AI to monitor glacier melt impacts, winning the Sustainia Award. The 2022 documentary Flow of Life features her work, while her book Engineering with Nature (2019) details her sustainable approaches.
