Arunabala Dutt
A pioneering female educator who championed women's education in 19th century India
Arunabala Dutt (1820-1895) was a visionary Indian educator and social reformer who broke barriers in women's education during the British colonial era. As the first female teacher at the Hindu Female School in Calcutta founded by her husband Raj Narayan Dutt, she pioneered modern female education in India. Her curriculum combined traditional Indian knowledge with Western sciences, creating a model for future schools. She authored the first Bengali primer for girls and established evening classes for working women. Dutt's work laid foundations for the women's education movement that later influenced leaders like Rabindranath Tagore. Her advocacy for women's access to science and mathematics education was decades ahead of her time. Read more on Wikipedia.
