A radical temperance activist whose direct actions reshaped early 20th-century prohibition movements.

Carrie Nation (1846–1911) was a fiery leader in the temperance movement, notorious for smashing saloons with a hatchet to protest alcohol consumption. Her bold tactics, including public demonstrations, brought national attention to prohibition. Born in Kentucky, Nation believed alcohol destroyed families, driving her to found the ‘Home Defenders League’ and publish the newsletter 《The Smasher’s Mail》.

Despite arrests and ridicule, Nation’s activism influenced the 18th Amendment’s ratification. Her autobiography, 《The Use and Need of the Life of Carrie A. Nation》, details her crusade. Modern feminists debate her methods, but her impact on social reform is undeniable. Explore her legacy at the Kansas Historical Society.
