Diego Gomez Marciales

Colombian engineer creating sustainable housing solutions for informal settlements

Diego Gomez Marciales (b.1985) is the visionary behind Urbano Ecológico, a Colombian social enterprise building earthquake-resistant homes from recycled materials. His construction method uses 70% less cement and sequesters CO2 during curing, earning him the 2022 Global Green Building Award. Over 2,500 families in Bogotá's favelas now live in homes built using his patented ECO-Block technology.

A graduate of MIT's Sustainable Cities program, Diego's work integrates:

  • 3D-printed building components
  • Local waste material sourcing systems
  • Community microfinance programs
His 2017 project 'Barrio Verde' transformed a drug-trafficking hotspot into a solar-powered eco-village. Featured in National Geographic's 'Future Cities' series, his model is now being replicated in Lima and Medellín.

Diego co-founded the Construyendo Avenidas NGO, which trains displaced communities in sustainable building techniques. His TED talk 'How to Build a City That Heals' highlights the connection between architecture and social equity. Current innovations include floating housing units for Colombian flood zones, showcased at COP27 in 2022.
