Chilean president who implemented groundbreaking land reforms and social policies that reshaped Latin American socialism.

Eduardo Frei Montalva (1911–1982) was a Chilean politician and statesman who served as president from 1964 to 1970. His administration introduced the Christian Democracy model, which combined socialist principles with democratic governance. Central to his legacy was the Reforma Agraria (Agricultural Reform), which redistributed 2.9 million hectares of land to peasants, reducing rural poverty and inequality. This policy became a blueprint for Latin American land reforms. Frei also expanded public education and healthcare systems, establishing universal access to primary education. His vision of 'revolution in liberty' influenced later socialist movements while maintaining democratic institutions. Though overshadowed by Salvador Allende's presidency, Frei's reforms created a foundation for Chile's modern welfare state. His memoir La Venda Cristiana remains a key text in Latin American political theory.
