Eduardo Gomes

Brazilian environmental engineer pioneering carbon-negative construction materials from Amazonian plant residues

Eduardo Gomes (b. 1989) revolutionized sustainable architecture through his 2021 invention of EcoBrick - a building material made from compressed Amazonian plant fibers mixed with volcanic ash. His company Vivant Materials has diverted over 12,000 tons of agricultural waste from rainforest regions while creating carbon-negative building solutions. Gomes' 2022 TEDx talk 'Growing Skyscrapers' popularized his concept of 'bio-cement' that absorbs CO2 during curing. His 2023 collaboration with UN Habitat produced low-cost housing prototypes for flood-prone regions using water-resistant EcoBrick variants. Gomes also developed the AgroScan AI system (2024) that analyzes agricultural waste patterns to optimize material production, winning the GreenStar Innovation Award. His work has been profiled in National Geographic's 'Planet or Plastic?' series and Scientific American's climate tech issue.
