Elizabeth Nanyonga
Ugandan nurse revolutionizing healthcare for HIV/AIDS patients through nutrition-focused interventions
Elizabeth Nanyonga, a Ugandan nurse and public health innovator, transformed HIV/AIDS care by integrating nutrition into treatment protocols. In the early 2000s, she noticed that antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) often failed due to patients’ malnutrition. At the Kitovu Mobile AIDS Organization, she developed a 'Food by Prescription' program, prescribing nutrient-rich foods like soybeans and peanuts alongside ARVs. This approach dramatically improved survival rates and reduced side effects.
Nanyonga’s model has been adopted globally, influencing WHO guidelines. Her work also challenged stereotypes about African healthcare solutions, proving that local innovations can address global crises. Recognized by the Global Health Council, she continues to advocate for holistic care in resource-limited settings. By prioritizing both medicine and nutrition, Nanyonga redefined HIV/AIDS treatment, showing that making a difference often requires bridging gaps between disciplines.
