Eugenie Clark
Marine biology pioneer who transformed global understanding of sharks and marine ecosystems
Dr. Eugenie Clark (1922–2015), known as the 'Shark Lady', revolutionized marine science through her groundbreaking shark research. Her discoveries included:
- Proving sharks could learn through training (countering 'mindless killer' stereotypes)
- Identifying natural shark repellents in Moses sole fish
- Documenting sleeping sharks in Mexican caves
As founder of Mote Marine Laboratory, she created a global hub for marine research. Clark's 72-year career included over 200 scientific expeditions, challenging gender barriers in oceanography. Her popular science writing, including the autobiography Lady with a Spear, inspired generations of marine biologists.
