Fathima Beevi

India's first female judge who shattered gender barriers in the judiciary

Fathima Beevi (1918–2004) was a pioneering Indian jurist and the first woman to become a judge in the Supreme Court of India. Born in a conservative Muslim family in Kerala, she defied societal norms by pursuing higher education and law. Her 1953 appointment as a sessions judge in Travancore-Cochin made her the first woman judge in India's history. Later, in 1974, she became the first woman judge of the Supreme Court, a milestone that paved the way for gender equality in India's legal system. Her rulings on gender justice and minority rights set precedents for future generations. Learn more about her legacy at Wikipedia or The Indian Express.
