Oman-based environmental innovator pioneering sustainable solutions in the Middle East

Fatima Al Khemeri is a visionary environmental scientist leading Oman's transition to sustainable practices through her company Greenovate, established in 2017. Her work focuses on waste management innovations and renewable energy solutions, addressing critical challenges in one of the world's most arid regions.

Al Khemeri's breakthrough came with the development of the 'Desert Bioreactor,' a solar-powered system that converts organic waste into biofertilizer using desert-adapted microbes. This technology has diverted 12,000+ tons of waste from landfills since 2020, while producing nutrient-rich fertilizers for Oman's agricultural sector. Her team's research has led to 15 patented innovations, including a solar-powered water purification system deployed in 20 villages.

Her community initiatives include the 'Green Fridays' program, mobilizing 5,000+ volunteers monthly for coastal cleanups and mangrove reforestation. A key achievement was the 2022 partnership with Masdar Institute to establish the Middle East's first circular economy hub in Muscat, creating 150 green jobs. Al Khemeri's advocacy extends to policy influence, advising Oman's Ministry of Environment on achieving its 2030 sustainability targets.

Her global impact includes collaborations with UNESCO's Clean Seas initiative and presentations at COP27. By 2023, Greenovate's solutions had reduced carbon emissions by 35,000 tons annually, equivalent to planting 2.5 million trees. Al Khemeri's leadership was recognized through the 2023 Arab Women in Sustainability Award and inclusion in Time Magazine's 'Next Generation Leaders' list.
