Gerald Durrell

Pioneering conservationist who revolutionized zoo management

Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) transformed wildlife conservation through his Jersey Zoo foundation and "captive breeding" philosophy. Unlike traditional zoos focused on exhibition, Durrell's innovative approach prioritized endangered species reproduction.

His 1959 bestseller 《My Family and Other Animals》 popularized conservation biology. Through BBC documentaries and 37 books, he educated millions about habitat preservation. Durrell's Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust has saved species like the Mauritius kestrel from extinction.

Rejecting colonial-era trophy hunting mentalities, he pioneered ethical ecotourism models. His work inspired modern "ark" conservation strategies, proving zoos could be research centers rather than animal prisons.
