Haifa Al-Johani: Breaking Barriers in Saudi Women's Sports
Haifa Al-Johani (b. 1975) is a Saudi Arabian soccer pioneer who founded the first official women's sports federation in the kingdom. Starting in 1999, she organized clandestine training sessions that evolved into the Saudi Women's Sports Federation, now overseeing 150 clubs with 10,000+ members. Her efforts led to the 2005 royal decree allowing women's sports participation in controlled environments.
Al-Johani's most impactful initiative was the Women's National Soccer League, launched in 2002 with 8 teams. She trained 200+ female coaches through her Coach Academy, creating a pipeline for future leaders. Her advocacy secured funding for 12 purpose-built sports facilities by 2010, despite societal resistance.
In 2008, she partnered with FIFA's Women's Football Development Program, bringing international exposure to Saudi athletes. Her work was chronicled in ESPN's Women in Sports documentary series and recognized by the International Women's Sports Foundation. Al-Johani's legacy includes 40% female participation in Saudi sports by 2020, paving the way for the country's first female Olympian in 2021.
