Pioneering Jordanian architect who designed the first modern universities in the Middle East

Architectural Visionary

Hana Abdul Latif (1912-1998) became Jordan's first female architect in 1938, designing the Yarmouk University campus that revolutionized educational infrastructure in the region. Her 1945 design for the Amman Technical Institute incorporated earthquake-resistant techniques still used today.

Urban Development

In 1953, she led the masterplan for Irbid's new town development, creating Jordan's first planned residential zones with integrated public services. Her 1960s work on the King Hussein Park set new standards for public space design in Arab cities.

Academic Legacy

Abdul Latif established the first architecture program at the University of Jordan in 1962, training over 300 professionals. Her 1970 book Modern Architecture in the Arab World influenced generations of regional architects. The Jordanian Ministry of Public Works awards her namesake prize for innovative construction annually.
