Hind Al-Attiya

Qatari environmental leader driving sustainability initiatives in the Gulf region

Hind Al-Attiya (born 1970) is a visionary environmentalist who transformed Qatar's ecological policies. As founder of the Qatar Green Building Council (2006), she pioneered green building standards in one of the world's most energy-intensive regions. Her 2012 initiative 'Sustainable Qatar' led to 30% reduction in municipal waste through innovative recycling programs. Al-Attiya's most notable achievement came in 2015 when she negotiated the UN Climate Change Conference's first Gulf nation commitment to renewable energy targets.

She co-founded the Arab Region Environmental Network (2018), connecting 200+ NGOs across North Africa and the Middle East. Her 2020 report 'Desert to Oasis' introduced water conservation techniques now used in UAE's Masdar City. Al-Attiya's TED talk "Greening the Sands" has become required viewing at Oxford's environmental studies programs. She currently advises the UNEP on climate strategies for oil-dependent economies.
