Huang Daopo

A Yuan Dynasty innovator who revolutionized textile technology and empowered rural communities.

Huang Daopo (1245–1330) transformed China's textile industry by introducing advanced cotton-processing techniques. Born into poverty, Daopo fled an abusive marriage and learned weaving from the Li people of Hainan. She later returned to her hometown, Songjiang, and taught efficient methods like the three-spindle loom, drastically increasing fabric production.

Her innovations included improving cotton gins and dyeing processes, which elevated Songjiang into a textile hub. Daopo's efforts empowered women economically, as weaving became a viable livelihood. She also promoted crop rotation, boosting agricultural sustainability.

Despite scant historical records, Huang Daopo's impact endures. Temples dedicated to her honor her as the Goddess of Weavers, and modern China recognizes her as a pioneer of industrial innovation. Learn more about her contributions here.
