James Mwangi

Pioneered accessible solar energy solutions for East Africa through M-KOPA Solar

James Mwangi is a Kenyan entrepreneur and social innovator whose work has transformed access to clean energy across East Africa. As co-founder and CEO of M-KOPA Solar, he developed a revolutionary pay-as-you-go solar home system that has brought electricity to over 2 million households across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda since 2012. This company uses mobile money technology to allow customers to pay for solar systems in small daily installments, creating a scalable model for providing energy access in off-grid areas. Mwangi's approach has been recognized by the World Economic Forum, which named him a Young Global Leader in 2014. His work directly addresses the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and has prevented an estimated 5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions through reduced kerosene use. Prior to M-KOPA, Mwangi worked in investment banking and management consulting, experiences that shaped his vision for combining financial innovation with social impact. He currently serves on the boards of organizations like the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs and continues to advocate for inclusive energy solutions through speaking engagements at global forums like the Clinton Global Initiative.
