Pioneer in providing affordable solar energy solutions to rural Africa through M-KOPA Solar
Josephine Ojiambo is a Kenyan entrepreneur and CEO of M-KOPA Solar, a company revolutionizing access to clean energy across Sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 2012 but achieving exponential growth post-2020, M-KOPA has brought electricity to over 2 million households through innovative pay-as-you-go solar systems. Ojiambo's leadership enabled the company to secure $100M Series D funding in 2022, expanding operations into Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Her work directly addresses UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), reducing reliance on polluting kerosene lamps. In 2023 she launched M-KOPA Pay, a financial services platform empowering 5 million users with digital banking access. Her TED Talk 'How solar power is lighting up Africa' has over 2 million views.
