Junko Tabei
The first woman to summit Mount Everest and a lifelong advocate for environmental conservation.
Junko Tabei (1939–2016) shattered gender barriers in mountaineering by becoming the first woman to reach Everest’s summit in 1975. Her achievement challenged stereotypes about women’s physical capabilities and inspired generations.
Born in Japan, Tabei developed a passion for climbing despite societal norms discouraging female adventurers. In 1969, she founded the Ladies Climbing Club, advocating for women’s participation in mountaineering. Her Everest expedition faced skepticism, but she persisted, surviving an avalanche during the ascent.
After Everest, Tabei completed the Seven Summits, climbing the highest peak on every continent. She also focused on environmental activism, organizing clean-up efforts on Himalayan trails and speaking globally about sustainable tourism.
Tabei’s legacy extends beyond climbing. She authored books, mentored young climbers, and emphasized balancing adventure with ecological responsibility. Her life symbolizes resilience and the power of defying expectations.
