Katy Murillo
Peruvian activist advancing women's political representation through grassroots organizing and digital advocacy.
Katy Murillo, born in 1986 in Lima, Peru, is the founder of Mujeres con Voz (Women with Voice), an NGO empowering women to participate in politics. Frustrated by Peru's low female political representation (just 34% in Congress as of 2023), she launched the initiative in 2015 to train women in political campaigning, digital advocacy, and leadership skills.
Murillo's strategy combines offline workshops with online platforms like the Virtual School for Women Leaders, reaching over 10,000 participants across Latin America. Her #EleccionesConVos campaign during Peru's 2021 elections mobilized 500,000 women voters and trained 200 candidates. She also co-founded Igualdad Política, a coalition pushing for legislative reforms to ensure gender parity in political appointments.
Her impact extends beyond Peru: the UN Women cited Mujeres con Voz as a model for gender equity programs in 2020. Murillo's TEDx talk (TEDx profile) argues that political equality requires both legal frameworks and cultural shifts. She continues advocating for intersectional representation, focusing on Indigenous and rural women's inclusion.
