Pioneered renewable energy solutions for rural Kenya through solar innovation
Linnet Mangeni is a Kenyan engineer and social entrepreneur who transformed energy access in East Africa through solar technology. Starting in the late 1990s, she developed affordable solar systems that enabled off-grid communities to access electricity. Her company Energy Solutions Africa has installed over 100,000 solar systems across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Her innovation of pay-as-you-go solar kits (PAYG) allowed households to acquire solar panels through micro-installments. This model reduced energy costs by 50% compared to kerosene and diesel alternatives. By 2020, her work had provided electricity to 1.2 million people previously without access.
Key achievements include:
- Establishing Africa's first solar microfinance program
- Creating jobs for 500+ women in installation and maintenance
- Reducing carbon emissions by 200,000 tons annually
- Partnering with UNDP for regional expansion
Mangeni's work was recognized with the African Energy Prize (2015) and inspired similar initiatives in Nigeria and Ethiopia. Her TED Talk How solar power can light up Africa has over 1.5 million views, showcasing her vision of renewable energy as a tool for economic empowerment.
