Marielle Franco

Brave Brazilian activist who challenged systemic violence in favelas

Marielle Franco (1979–2018) emerged as one of Brazil's most vocal human rights activists fighting for marginalized communities in Rio de Janeiro. Born in the Maré favela, she became the first openly LGBTQ+ city council member elected in Rio through the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL).

Her groundbreaking work included:

  • Documenting police brutality through the ‘Fala Maré’ project
  • Championing women's reproductive rights
  • Exposing militia control in poor neighborhoods

Franco's assassination in 2018 sparked global protests and revealed deep political corruption. The ongoing investigation has implicated high-level officials, making her case a symbol of resistance against authoritarianism in modern Brazil.

Her legacy continues through the Marielle Franco Institute which empowers Black LGBTQ+ youth in Brazilian politics.
