Mennatallah El Kady
Egyptian-American scientist pioneering flexible solar cell technology
Mennatallah El Kady is a materials scientist known for developing flexible solar cells using laser-induced graphene. Born in Egypt and educated in the US, she created the breakthrough technology while studying at UCLA in 2012. Her innovation allows solar cells to be printed on paper or fabric, enabling lightweight, portable energy solutions. This research was featured in ACS Nano journal and earned her a spot on Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2013.
El Kady's work addresses energy access challenges in developing regions where traditional solar infrastructure is impractical. Her solar cells can be produced using low-cost materials and simple manufacturing processes. The technology has potential applications in disaster relief, wearable electronics, and off-grid communities. She co-founded Graphene Energy to commercialize her research, securing $2.1 million in seed funding by 2019.
El Kady's achievements include a TEDx talk The Future of Energy is in Your Hands and being named one of Africa's Top 100 Innovators under 40. She advocates for renewable energy equity through partnerships with UNDP and the African Development Bank. Her innovations have been showcased at the World Economic Forum's Global Shapers Summit and featured in NPR and Nature. At 28 years old, El Kady represents a new generation of scientists redefining energy technology's possibilities.
