Mira Alfassa

Spiritual collaborator who co-founded Auroville international community

Known as 'The Mother', Mira Alfassa (1878-1973) played a crucial role in developing one of the world's most innovative spiritual communities. Born in Paris to Egyptian and Turkish parents, her multicultural background informed her vision for Auroville - the 'City of Dawn' established in 1968.

Working with Sri Aurobindo, she developed Integral Yoga, combining physical, mental and spiritual disciplines. Her most tangible achievement remains Auroville, designed as:

  • A universal town without national borders
  • A living laboratory for human unity
  • A prototype for sustainable living

Alfassa's innovations included:

  • Pioneering architectural experiments with hyperbolic structures
  • Developing new educational models without formal curricula
  • Creating self-sufficient agricultural systems

Her 800-page spiritual journal 'The Agenda' documents 22 years of conscious spiritual evolution. Today, Auroville attracts researchers studying alternative governance models and ecological sustainability.
