Mónica Villamizar
Colombian educator bridging digital divides through mobile learning labs
Mónica Villamizar is the founder of Móvilab, a Colombian nonprofit deploying solar-powered mobile classrooms to underserved communities. Since 2020, her initiative has provided STEM education to over 30,000 children in rural regions, areas affected by conflict, and urban slums. The labs' innovative design includes AR/VR equipment powered by renewable energy systems.
Her most impactful project is the Ciberescuelas program, which trains teachers to use gamified learning platforms. This approach increased math proficiency rates by 40% in pilot regions according to UNESCO's 2023 report. Villamizar's team developed the EduApp, a offline-capable educational tool now used in 12 Latin American countries.
In 2024, Villamizar launched the Ciberactivistas movement, empowering youth to create digital content addressing local challenges. This initiative won the UNICEF Innovation Prize and inspired similar programs in Guatemala and Peru. Her work has been documented in the documentary La Educación que Salva (2023) and featured in National Geographic's education series.
