Nakisanze Seggane

Leading researcher in malaria control, developing innovative methods to combat mosquito-borne diseases in Uganda

Dr. Nakisanze Seggane is a Ugandan entomologist whose work has redefined malaria prevention strategies in East Africa. Known as the “Mozzie Whisperer,” she pioneered the Mozzie Deathtrap – a low-cost, odor-baited mosquito trap that reduces malaria transmission by 70% in field tests. Deployed in 15 Ugandan districts since 2021, her invention has saved an estimated 12,000 lives annually. Seggane’s research at Makerere University focuses on mosquito behavior, leading to breakthroughs in gene editing to disrupt disease vectors. She co-founded Africa Gene Innovations, training 300+ African scientists in CRISPR technology. Her 2023 collaboration with the WHO expanded trap distribution to Kenya and Tanzania. Seggane’s TED Talk ‘The Secret Life of Mosquitoes’ has over 2M views. Critics debate scalability of traps versus bed nets, but her grassroots approach has empowered rural communities. Recognized as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer in 2022, Seggane embodies Africa’s leadership in public health innovation.
