Raja Ram Mohan Roy
The 'Father of Modern India' who championed education, women's rights, and religious reform to modernize Indian society.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772–1833) was a Bengali polymath and social reformer instrumental in India's transition from colonial rule to modernity. He founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828 to promote rationalist Hinduism and oppose practices like sati. As a pioneer of women's education, he established the Hindu College (now Presidency University) in Calcutta. His lobbying led to the 1829 ban on sati by the British Raj. Roy also advocated for legal and administrative reforms, influencing India's judicial system. His work laid the groundwork for India's independence movement.
