Rana Eid

Jordanian environmentalist leading Middle East's plastic reduction initiatives

Rana Eid is a Jordanian environmental lawyer and activist behind the region's most impactful plastic reduction campaigns. In 2020 she founded Zero Waste Jordan, which successfully lobbied for Jordan's 2022 Plastic Reduction Law banning single-use plastics nationwide. This legislation has reduced plastic waste by 40% in urban areas within 18 months.

Eid's 'Plastic Free Ramadan' campaign during 2023's holy month engaged over 2 million participants through partnerships with mosques and food distributors. Her 'Refill Not Landfill' initiative has established 300 water refill stations across Amman, reducing plastic bottle usage by 60% in those areas.

In 2024 she pioneered the Middle East's first plastic credit system, allowing businesses to offset plastic use by funding recycling infrastructure. This model is now being adopted in Lebanon and Palestine. Eid was named UN Environment Programme's Young Champion of the Earth (2023) and recently testified before the Gulf Cooperation Council on regional sustainability policies.
