Tawakkol Karman
Yemeni Nobel laureate and journalist who led peaceful protests during the Arab Spring, advocating for democracy and women's rights.
Known as the "Mother of the Revolution", Tawakkol Karman co-founded Women Journalists Without Chains in 2005 to combat censorship in Yemen. Her 2011 Nobel Peace Prize made her the first Arab woman laureate, recognizing her nonviolent struggle for female political participation.
During the Arab Spring, Karman organized weekly sit-ins in Sana'a's University Square, demanding President Saleh's resignation. Despite imprisonment and death threats, she leveraged social media to globalize Yemen's uprising. Today, she advocates for international intervention in Yemen's civil war and mentors young activists through the Tawakkol Karman Foundation.
