Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre

Peruvian political visionary and founder of pan-Americanism

Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre (1895-1979) was a Peruvian intellectual who formulated the Integralist movement, a pan-American ideology advocating for Latin American unity. Born in Chiclayo, he studied in Europe and developed his doctrine emphasizing cultural sovereignty and economic independence. His manifesto "La Granja de Alpamayo" (1924) inspired movements across the continent. Despite being exiled multiple times, he founded the American Revolutionary Alliance (ARA) in 1924, influencing leaders like Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. His vision of a united Latin America free from US imperialism remains a cornerstone of regional political thought. Though overshadowed by contemporaries like Getúlio Vargas, his ideas continue to resonate in modern social movements.
