Invented the first practical parachute used by military forces
Vladimir Šotra (1875-1944), known as Vladimir Karapandžić, was a Serbian inventor whose parachute design revolutionized aviation safety. Working in the early 20th century, he developed the first pack-type parachute that could be deployed manually from aircraft. His 1911 patent introduced a conical canopy shape and folding technique still used today. Karapandžić's invention was adopted by the Austro-Hungarian military during WWI, saving countless pilots' lives. His work laid foundation for modern skydiving and emergency evacuation systems. Despite his contributions, he faced financial struggles and died in poverty. Modern parachute manufacturers like Skydive Chicago still reference his pioneering designs. His story is preserved in the Belgrade Aviation Museum and the Serbian Inventors Hall of Fame. Aviation historians like Dr. Ivanusic (MIT) credit him with making controlled descent a reality for pilots worldwide.
