Wael Ghonim
Egyptian internet executive and activist who catalyzed the 2011 Egyptian Revolution through social media
Wael Ghonim (born 1977) is an Egyptian internet pioneer whose innovative use of social media platforms like Facebook and Google played a pivotal role in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. As the former marketing director of Google Middle East, he created the now famous Facebook page We Are All Khaled Saeed following the murder of Khaled Saeed by Egyptian police in 2010. This page became a central organizing tool for the January 25 Revolution, attracting over 400,000 followers and coordinating mass protests that led to Hosni Mubarak's ouster.
After being detained by Egyptian authorities during the uprising, his subsequent interview upon release brought global attention to the revolution's goals. Ghonim's 2012 book <《The Day the World Changed Its Mind》 details his experiences and the power of social media in political change. He currently advises organizations on digital activism and media strategy through his company MindShift, continuing to advocate for internet freedom and democratic participation in the Arab world.
