Wangechi Munghai
Founder of Toto Health, revolutionizing menstrual health access across Africa through affordable and sustainable products.
Wangechi Munghai is a Kenyan social entrepreneur and founder of Toto Health, a company dedicated to breaking the stigma around menstruation while providing affordable menstrual products to underserved communities. Since launching in 2021, Toto Health has distributed over 2 million pads across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, addressing a critical gap in women’s health infrastructure. Munghai’s approach combines innovative financing models with grassroots education campaigns, training over 5,000 girls in menstrual hygiene management. Her work has been featured in World Economic Forum and BBC Future.
Munghai’s journey began while studying public health at the University of Nairobi, where she documented how 65% of girls in rural areas missed school during menstruation due to lack of access to sanitary products. This inspired her to design a subscription model that delivers affordable pads using solar-powered refrigeration systems. The company’s partnership with UNICEF in 2023 expanded its reach to conflict-affected regions in Somalia, establishing 150 community distribution centers. Her TEDx talk on 'Reimagining Menstrual Equity' has garnered over 2 million views.
