A Kenyan environmental innovator pioneering low-cost water filtration systems for rural communities

Winnie Musyoka is a visionary environmental engineer from Kenya who has made groundbreaking contributions to water purification technology. In 2021, she launched Water Technologies for Africa, an organization that develops affordable filtration systems using locally sourced materials. Her invention, the Solar-Powered Clay Pot Filter, has provided clean drinking water to over 500,000 people across East Africa. This innovation reduces waterborne diseases by 70% while costing 90% less than imported solutions. Musyoka's work is highlighted in Nature Sustainability and she was named a TED Fellow in 2023 for her presentation on Decolonizing Water Technology. Her advocacy for community-led solutions has inspired similar initiatives in Madagascar and Rwanda.
