Colombian bioengineer revolutionizing health monitoring through breath analysis

Jorge Soto is a biomedical innovator whose company Inspirio has pioneered non-invasive health monitoring using breath analysis. Born in Bogotá in 1985, Soto's breakthrough came while working at MIT Media Lab, where he discovered that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human breath could indicate over 80% of known diseases. This led to the development of the 'SpiroSmart' device, a portable breathalyzer that detects diseases like diabetes, lung cancer, and infections through breath analysis. His company, founded in 2013, has since raised $15 million in venture funding and partnered with major hospitals including Johns Hopkins Medicine. The technology reduces healthcare costs by eliminating the need for blood tests and invasive procedures, with potential to save millions in diagnostic expenses annually. Soto's work was highlighted in Nature Biomedical Engineering and MIT Technology Review. He also co-founded the Latin American Bioengineering Network to promote STEM education in underserved regions. His vision of 'breathomics' could redefine preventive healthcare in developing countries where traditional diagnostics are inaccessible.
