Asdrúbal Oliveira

Brazilian social entrepreneur who pioneered environmental education in Amazon communities

Asdrúbal Oliveira is the founder of the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM), established in 1993 to combat deforestation in the Amazon basin. His work bridges scientific research with community empowerment, developing sustainable land-use models that balance economic needs with ecological preservation. IPAM's agroforestry programs have helped over 50,000 families adopt practices that increase crop yields while protecting forests.

Oliveira pioneered the "Amazon Sustainable Landscapes" concept, which integrates cattle ranching, agriculture, and conservation. His collaboration with indigenous communities led to the creation of protected areas covering 1.2 million hectares. He developed the first satellite monitoring system for illegal logging in the region, now used by Brazil's environmental agency.

Recipient of the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2008, Oliveira's strategies influenced Brazil's National Climate Change Plan. His book 《Amazonia Viva》 details his vision for sustainable development. His work with the UN's REDD+ program demonstrates global impact, earning him a seat at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference.
