Mario Molina

Nobel Prize-winning chemist who discovered the ozone layer depletion mechanism and catalyzed global environmental action

Mexican chemist Mario Molina (1943–2020) co-authored the landmark 1974 study revealing how chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) destroy stratospheric ozone. Despite initial industry resistance, his rigorous research convinced world leaders to adopt the Montreal Protocol (1987), the most successful environmental treaty in history.

Molina's work bridged science and policy. As a presidential advisor in Mexico, he implemented air quality reforms in Mexico City. Later, he advised U.S. presidents on climate change, emphasizing that 'environmental protection shouldn’t be a partisan issue.'

Unlike many scientists, Molina prioritized public communication. He co-founded the Mario Molina Center to advance sustainable development in Latin America. His ozone-layer recovery model proved accurate, with NASA confirming a 20% reduction in ozone holes by 2023.
